The Avengers have had over 100 members since their founding, the cast rotates regularly. Old characters come and go, and come back again, and new characters join regularly
The original founding team from Avengers #1 1964 was Iron Man, Thor, Ant-Man, Wasp and Hulk. Hulk left almost immediately, never to return, and Captain America joined in #4 and has been the team’s most consistent leader.
In #16, everyone left except Cap, and new recruits Hawkeye, Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch joined. Other iconic Avengers from the 1960s included the Vision, Black Panther, Hercules, and the Black Widow. Along with later members Wonder Man, She-Hulk, and Ms. Marvel, this makes up all of the classic most consistent members of the team.
Nearly everyone in the Marvel Universe (except for X-Men characters) has been on the Avengers. The entire Fantastic Four (except for the Human Torch) have been members before too.
It wasn’t until the 80s that a second squad – called Avengers West Coast – was established. This eventually folded and there was one team again. A few years ago, the teams split into the New Avengers and Mighty Avengers, the training group Avengers: the Initiative, and now we’re getting the Dark Avengers.
