Avengers Issue
Which comics changed the comic industry, and why? Issue number and year of publication, please.?
Action Comics #1 yes because it was the first SUPERhero, Detective Comics #27 no, because Batman did not change the industry, successful though he was. Fantastic Four #1 yes because it was the first Superhero family. Avengers #1 no because the superhero team had already been done before.
I will have to both agree and disagree with Fantastic Four #1 it is notable because it is the first Marvel comic that Jack Kirby and Stan Lee worked on together. Stan Lee revolutionalized the industry by introducing a flawed humainity to his heros. He gave them everyday problems and events to deal with. I disagree that it was the first super hero family that distinction to me belongs to the Marvel Family better known as Shazam!
Shazam first appeared in Whiz Comics #2 published by Fawcett Comics in 1939 (over 20 years before FF#1) Not only did most of Billy Batsons family have super powers Shazam was the first superhero to ever be adopted to film in 1941.
Th Phantom while not appearing in comic book format was considerd the first costumed hero. He appeared in newspaper comic strips beginning Feb. 17 1936.
Batman may not have changed the industry but Batman #426 – 429 deserve a place on this list. A death in the family storyline was the first comic to get mainstream coverage appearing on talk shows, newspapers, and the evening news. It also let the fans decide on Robin’s fate by introducing a 1-900 system to call in and vote on how you wanted the story to end. (Ironically this same system is now being used on reality tv programs like American Idol)
This list is hardly comprehensive there are many notable comics and it would be difficult to name them all.
