Detective Comics
Is subscribing to Detective Comics and Batman Comics sufficient enough to understanding modern batman stories?

I am not asking where to begin, I am very familiar with the Batman mythos , story arc’s, character’s, etc. I’ve been reading many back issues from the 80′s and 90′s, but I want to move on to modern stories. Their are many batman titles right now, including origins, return of Bruce Wayne, etc. In the 90′s you were able to get by with reading just Detective Comics and Batman comics. Sure their was an occasional optional story that appeared in Robin or others but they weren’t necessary! What I really want to know is what two modern monthly Batman comics (not trade paperbacks) should I spend my money on? Keep in mind I am a sure fan of the old Detective and Batman comics from the Year One and on era. Please help me save by not spending money on a thousand monthly batman titles, I only want two :) THANKS!
PS
I know what is going on with the modern titles.

You might want to wait a couple weeks before making that decision. Comic-Con is about to start in San Diego and they’re going to be announcing a lot of major shakeups in creative teams there. Plus nothing will really be certain until ‘The Return of Bruce Wayne’ finishes up and we know what’s going to be happening where.

I mean currently you’re probably fine with just ‘Batman and Robin’ and ‘Batman’ (with ‘The Return of Bruce Wayne’ mini as well) since those are the major driving stories right now. ‘Detective Comics’ recently had the amazing Batwoman story arc, but now that it’s over and she’s moving to her own title, it seems to be in holding mode with unnecessary fill-in stories, just waiting for things for play out in other titles.

You’re really best off just waiting until Bruce is back and seeing where the chips fall and what creative team is taking over what book. The landscape will probably change dramatically in a few months.
