Jimmy Olsen

KILL Jimmy Olsen: Should DC do it?
A Few years ago, someone wrote somewhere, maybe here, that DC should kill Jimmy Olsen. I remember the writer’s disdain for Jimmy’s 50s persona and the whole “Superman’s Pal” thing.
Do you think Jimmy should die?
No. He really seemed boring and dull in the early seventies then Kirby was given the magazine to launch his Fourth World, and for a while it was so cool you can still get trade paperback reprints of those issues.
Sometimes I think comics try too hard to be hip — movies definitely. I recently saw the trailers for Thor and Green Lantern. I was when I finished disappointed by Thor and determined to avoid Green Lantern (which I loved as a kid in the sixties and seventies) at all costs. The guy with the beard isn’t so bad — I just wish they had given him one of those Lee/Kirby stories. The Green Lantern trailer was of a scum. I don’t care. That’s not the silver age character.
If you study drama one thing they say is the central character in a farce should be relatively colorless. It is those around him who should be jumping up and down, running around and trying to involve everyone in their own mad schemes. As such Jimmy sometimes was a great focal point to his own magazines. We need more boy scouts and girl guides in our comics, not less.

End of the Summer $7.47 Dar Williams’s End of the Summer finds her following in the techno-folkie footsteps of Suzanne Vega and Rickie Lee Jones. Most of the tracks feature muscular rhythms provided by Sammy Merendino’s programmed drum loops, and thickened textures provided by layers of electric and acoustic guitars. This new approach pays dividends for a singer/songwriter whose thin soprano and coffeehouse lyrics have o… |

Call Northside 777 [VHS] $4.99 The postwar vogue for documentary-style realism, prompted by The March of Time and the critical success of Roberto Rossellini’s Open City, cross bred with film noir to create a compelling strain of crime films; this is one of the most low-key and credible, based on the true story of a Chicago reporter (James Stewart) who became convinced of the innocence of a death-row inmate (Richard Conte).
