Is it true that first-time novelists have a harder time selling “long” novels?
I know first time authors have a hard time being published in general, but I read in a writer advice article that publishing co. prefer you to hand them a somewhat short novel. Mine is around 400 pgs, not huge but not small- should I trim it?
That’s the thing! I’ve gone over it again and agin- there’s nothing that can be cut, it’s all relevant and pretty fast-paced, and the things that aren’t part of the major plot are tie-ins to the plot of the sequel I’m planning. I suppose I could condense it more, but… it’ll cause me physical pain lol. How many pages would be ideal for a sci-fi novel?
It’s sci-fi adult, not YA if that makes a difference…

You should go by word count, not page count.
Young adult novels are usually between 50,000 and 90,000 words; especially if you’re a first time novelist. If it sells well, then the publishing company may be interested in a longer book. Look at J.K. Rowling. In general though, young adults won’t read something longer than that.
Adult fiction is usually between 90,000 and 150,000 words, but it’s way more flexible and is usually dependent on the genre.
Just edit well, and then see where you’re at. Have people from your target audience read it and tell you what they think. Good Luck.
