A question about the Thor comics.?

After catching a sneak-peak of some of Marvel’s upcoming releases I recently dove back into reading marvel comics and have been pushing my way through the “The Mighty Thor” series. I just got to the “lord of Asgard/ Lord of Earth” portion and am confused. At what point did it cease to be mainstream continuity (Earth – 616 ) or was it ever? Or should I continue reading, and it will all make sense? And where online or from one of you lovely answers might I find a basic timeline of the series?
